Three coats of everything else, and sanding...

Getting Ready to Work with Grown-Ups

Haven't used my heavy French tackle box in years...

I'm starting my first tutoring session with an adult student this evening. I've worked with kids for so long. And, just like with my fourth graders, tonight we're starting with pinch pots. We're going to make rattles. Pinch pots are so versatile, because they can take off in so many directions: totems, giant beads, organic shapes, sculptural forms, and so much more. I'm trying to channel all of my previous teachers, and realizing how grateful I am for their investment of time and effort. Wish me luck!

These are some "keeper" tools that are going back into the box...

Sorry little piggy, these tools aren't "basics"...

Now I feel like I'm ready to teach, with some of my "go to" tools...

The pinch pot, it's such a glorious stepping stone...

Mother's Day

I feel that I need to officially thank my sister on Mother's Day, for being the best kind of mom to me. There are so many ways that she has changed and shaped my life. When I was a little girl, the youngest of four, I often felt lost or left behind. Jana made sure that I was noticed and loved. She used her artistic talents to enrich my life. When I was five, she gave me a set of paper dolls, cleverly made from cardboard, construction paper, and doilies. Later, she created upholstered dollhouse furniture for me. She also made clothes for my dolls, sometimes crocheting or sewing them. My Barbie had a chic white coat with rabbit fur trim. I always loved opening her presents, and I still do. When I felt bad, I could always go to her room, and I would instantly feel better. She knew just what to say.

When she left for college, I remember feeling completely bereft. She left me a copy of "Little Women" to read while she was gone. Then she got married and moved away to New York City. I was so grateful when she and her husband finally returned to live nearby.

Over the years, I've relied heavily upon her good judgement and her kindness. She listens to my complaining, gives me advice, and always leaves me feeling better than she finds me. Now that our family has aged, Jana has taken on the role of being the glue that binds our family together. Thanksgiving meals, birthdays, and every other holiday is shared in her home. She keeps us close and connected. She drove 2 1/2 hours one way to help out in my classroom every Friday. Amazingly, she did this for 13 years. It was a pleasure to see her once a week, and to talk with her over lunch, which she brought each Friday.

I want to thank Jana for everything. For trying to set me on the right path in life at an early age, and even still now. I also want to thank all of the kids who let me be a part of their lives. I've received a lot of sweet Mother's Day presents over the years, and I'm grateful for the love that kids radiate. Happy Mother's Day!
