A saucy rope maker teaches us how to braid sisal... |
What a great field trip! Today, we visited the Pacific House and the Custom House in Monterey. The students learned about the games kids played in the 1800's. Then, we learned how to make rope. After that, we learned about the process of spinning wool, and we learned how to embroider. A skilled park ranger taught us about branding and about the importance of cattle in Early California. Finally, we were able to learn how to cook tortillas on a small wood burning stove. After lunch, we learned a bit about the operations at the Custom House. This is exactly how learning should happen. It was fast paced, hands on, and super interesting. Many thanks to all of the docents and volunteers who made the day so fun for our class.
